Homeowners who have a small space outside their homes can also grow their shrubs as there are different dwarf shrubs for you. Aside from the beauty of these plants, they are also known as low-maintenance plants. Space is an essential consideration for many as they search for the best plant to suit their home and lifestyle. Whether you are new or an expert gardener, everyone wants the easy way around the garden. If you think of the same way, low maintenance dwarf shrubs are here to make your outside façade look lively.

Low-maintenance plants are great for landscaping without tedious tasks such as watering, pruning, and more. Please note that the growth rate may differ according to the hardiness zone, so it is good to always check with your local extension office. The following are dwarf shrubs and low-maintenance plants that are perfect for your space and time constraint living.

Low-Maintenance Plants

1. Dwarf Fothergilla

It is a deciduous shrub that can suit a small garden and grow in all seasons. This shrub is very compact with its 2 to 3 feet length and width after maturity. It has sweet-smelling flowers that bloom during springtime. You will also love its oval-shaped leaves with the deep green color that is a perfect backdrop to its colorful flowers.

These low-maintenance plants are ideal for well-drained and moist soil with full or little sun exposure. It does not require regular watering for as long as the soil is moist enough for the plant to live. It is a pest and disease resistant plant, so there is no need for pesticide application.

The native mountain pine can grow up to 20 feet tall, but the dwarf version can only grow as little as 3 to 4 feet. This type of mountain pine slowly grows to a beautiful plant with little attention. It has unique needle-like foliage that offers different shades and produces amazing seed cones that add to its appeal.

It is the plant for you if you are struggling with poor quality garden soil as it thrives in sandy, clay, and other types of soil. This dwarf pine tree can grow with rainfall as a primary water source and does not require any pruning and growth with full sunlight.

3. Glossy Abelia

It is known as a semi-evergreen shrub that losses most of its leaves during winter. You will like its round-shaped arching branches with smaller leaves. Spring season can offer dark green foliage that turns into red to purple color in fall.

Glossy abelia is one of the best low-maintenance plants if you are flower-loving as it blooms from spring to fall with a mild fragrance. The soil’s quality is not an issue as it can grow to any soil and loves full sun to shady areas within the garden. However, it does require annual pruning, especially under the full sun.

Some varieties for you to consider are Crippsii and Wilson’s Pink Dwarf. These two types of very popular because of their striking foliage with leaves that change colors such as red, pink, yellow, orange, and green.
