1. Lack of nutrients

Healthy and green grass has enough amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium. Also, Nitrogen helps the plants to give off a green color. At the same time, Phosphorous is good because it inspires root growth. Potassium strengthens the plants, making them free from disease.

Tip: Grasses have a different amount of needs depending on their type, age, and origin. To cure yellow grass, feed them with the right amount of fertilizer. Instead of throwing out your kitchen waste, use them to enrich your soil by making compost.

2. Too many nutrients

You’ll only need enough amount of nutrients in your grass, as is also mentioned above. Greener grass does not cry out for more nutrients. Giving off too much will again turn your grass into yellow.

Tip: Give your soil a rest. Ensure your soil’s drainage and aeration.

3. Overwatering and underwatering

Water is a plant necessity. However, overwatering or underwatering causes yellow spots on the lawn. Besides, an overwatered lawn is a home for fungi.

Tip: If you have overwatered your grass, immediately stop to give it days to rest from water. Suppose you are underwatering water early in the morning or at night to avoid easy evaporation due to the sun.

4. Plant disease

It will follow if the grass lacks nutrients. Also, fungi, which are the leading cause of plant disease, rob nutrients from the grass. As a result, discoloration will happen. Fungi are more likely to enter weak plants.

Tip: Make sure that your lawn is free from saturation and thatch buildup. Cure the yellow grass by applying a fungicide. It will kill the damaging fungi and prevent them from reproducing.

5. Pests

Pests such as grubs and roundworms eat grassroots. You won’t notice them quickly because they live below the soil’s surface. These pests eat the grassroots. Hence, there is no way for the leaves to get nutrients, leaving them yellow.

Tip: Spread out beneficial nematodes in your lawn. These species will kill grubs and larvae beneath your grass. Now, you won’t have to worry about how to cure yellow grass and avoid toxic chemicals. You can also use a grub killer that is safe for other organisms.

6. Short grasses

Grass also stores moisture. Mowing the lawn too short will let the grass dry up faster. Remember that sun-dried grass will not remain its green color.

Tip: When mowing, leave a height of 2 and a half inches in your grass.

7. Dormancy

Grass turning yellow doesn’t always suggest an issue. Grass in the dormancy stage is slow in their food-making process. You won’t always have to find a way to cure yellow grass because it might be normal.

Tip: If you can pull up grass easily, there are problems with your lawn. So, if your grass is yellowish or brown but still holds firmly onto the soil, your grass is dormant.

8. Pet urine

See if your dog or cat often urinates on your lawn. Urine is not only composed of water. Many are not aware, but a dog or cat urine contains ammonia, sulfate, phosphate, chloride, sodium, and more. It might sound healthy to you, but it’s not. However, it could also cause a risk to your health. This problem is similar to over-fertilization. The high amount of Nitrogen and salt from the urine will turn your grass yellow and kill them.

There are smells that dogs or cats do not like. Solution: Train your pets to pee in a designated place. Search for a non-toxic repellant such as peppers to prevent your pets from urinating on the lawn.
